Lactulose helps to decrease the concentration of blood ammonia in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. It is also used to treat constipation as an osmotic laxative. This non-absorbable disaccharide is catabolized through the bacterial flora to short chain fatty acids.
[3] The enzymes of the mammalian digestive tract do not have the ability to digest lactulose.
